European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
The ECDL is an internationally accepted certificate intended for those who wish to know how to use a computer and would like to show formally that they have the necessary level of knowledge and competence to use common computer applications.
It is an entry-level certification that covers core computer skills such as:
- File management
- Word processing
- Use of spreadsheets and databases
- Presentation techniques with computers
- General information and communication skills using the internet and email.
The qualification is modular, and the
tests (on Syllabus Version 4.0) can be taken in any
sequence.
Success in the various modules is recorded in a candidate's "Driving Licence" log book which, breaking with the licence metaphor, more closely resembles a passport and does not include space for a questionable photograph!
Our staff advocate the ECDL
to new computer users and concur with the British
Computer Society that the ECDL
is "A flexible and accessible
qualification … with a highly effective training
delivery model … bringing greater public awareness
of the benefits of active participation in the Information
Society."
